USDA’s weekly Crop Progress and Condition report showed the corn crop continues to deteriorate in most of the western Corn Belt states, while soybean conditions remained remarkably stable. State-level breakdowns of the Pro Farmer Crop Condition Index, which compresses the USDA’s weekly crop progress report into a single, weighted, easy-to-track number that’s widely used to monitor the health and potential of U.S. crops during the growing season and more details around USDA ratings, are below.
Corn
USDA’s rating of the corn crop shows 14% as very poor to poor, 25% fair, and 61% good to excellent. The good to excellent categories saw a 2% decrease, now marking consecutive weeks of declines after condition ratings were mostly static through June and early July. Those categories are now 12 percentage points below the levels seen at this time last year, and the lowest for this time since 2023. The Crop Condition Index saw a 3.72 point decline as sharp declines in the western to northwestern Corn Belt offset steady to slightly higher condition ratings in the Southeastern U.S. Nebraska and North Dakota notched the largest declines of 1.77 points and 0.99 points, respectively.

Soybeans
USDA’s soybean ratings show the crop rated as 9% very poor to poor, 28% fair, and 63% good to excellent. Net U.S. ratings were unchanged from last week. Still, minor state level changes saw the CCI decline 0.77 points to 364.32. Condition changes were very minor in most states, and changes were mixed across regions. Soybeans are entering their crucial weather stage this week, making the following weeks reports of particular importance for the crop.

Wheat
Spring wheat ratings came in at 12% very poor to poor, 33% fair, and 55% good to excellent. The good to excellent category was up 2% from the previous week. The CCI rose just 0.22 point in response to the state-level ratings changes, as declines in the top-producing state of North Dakota negated nearly all of the increases in Montana and South Dakota.
