USDA’s weekly Crop Progress and Condition report showed that triple digit heat indices in the Midwest and Plains that occurred over the weekend worked to cause stress across multiple crops. State-level breakdowns of the Pro Farmer Crop Condition Index, which compresses the USDA’s weekly crop progress report into a single, weighted, easy-to-track number that’s widely used to monitor the health and potential of U.S. crops during the growing season and more details around USDA ratings, are below:
Corn
USDA’s rating of the corn crop shows 12% as very poor to poor, 25% fair, and 63% good to excellent. The good to excellent categories saw a 4 point decrease from last week, which was the largest single week decline this year as well as below the range of all analyst estimates. The Crop Condition Index (0 to 500 scale, 500 equals perfect) subsequently saw a 8.25 point decline as well. A majority of states saw declines, though the mid-South states of Missouri, Tennessee, and North Carolina saw minor gains of less than half a point each.

Soybeans
USDA’s soybean ratings show the crop rated as 9% very poor to poor, 28% fair, and 63% good to excellent. The good to excellent categories fell 3 points from last week. The CCI rating dropped 5.23 points from last week as well. Rating changes in soybeans mirrored those in corn, with states in the Midwest and northern Plains facing deteriorations while those in the Southeast were steady to slightly higher.

Wheat
Spring wheat ratings came in at 15% very poor to poor, 32% fair, and 53% good to excellent. The good to excellent category was unchanged from the previous week, but a decline in fair ratings and an increase in poor to very poor categories led to the CCI dropping 7.01 points. Dryness in the Dakotas was the main driver of change this week, with both states notching declines that offset gains elsewhere.
