Full impact of excessive rains across the Midwest might not yet be reflected in crop ratings.

USDA’s weekly Crop Progress and Condition report released Monday afternoon showed a slight decline in both corn and soybean conditions, while spring wheat was able to rebound slightly.

State-level breakdowns of the Pro Farmer Crop Condition Index, which compresses the USDA’s weekly crop progress report into a single, weighted, easy-to-track number that’s widely used to monitor the health and potential of U.S. crops during the growing season and more details around USDA ratings, are below.

Corn

USDA’s rating of the corn crop shows 15% as very poor to poor, 25% fair, and 60% good to excellent. The good to excellent categories were down 1% from the week prior, coming in just below analyst estimates that expected the crop to remain steady. The Crop Condition Index saw a 2.67 point decline. Hot weather in the western Corn Belt and the southern U.S. drove most of the decline.

Soybeans

USDA’s soybean ratings show the crop rated as 10% very poor to poor, 29% fair, and 61% good to excellent. The good to excellent categories declined 1% from last week, making for consecutive weeks of declining conditions. The changes saw the CCI drop 1.89 points to 361.95. Condition declines were widespread this week, with minor deterioration across many states joining to drive the index lower. Increases were noted in Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio however. It should be noted that some respondents to the crop conditions survey submit data before the weekend, meaning the full impact of rains in those states may not yet be seen in the ratings.
