Trump pushes for lower beef prices, raising concern among producers (Bloomberg): President Donald Trump recently publicly told U.S. cattle producers that they’ve been doing well thanks to the tariffs on imported beef, including a 50% tariff on Brazilian beef, and that now they need to lower their prices for American consumers. At the same time, the administration floated increasing imports of beef from Argentina as a tool to bring down domestic beef costs.
Ranching groups responded sharply. They pointed out that the U.S. herd is at a historic low, drought and feed costs are high, and beef production can’t simply be ramped up overnight — meaning imports won’t quickly ease retail prices. They also argue that bringing in more Argentine beef could undercut U.S. producers, despite the tariffs that were meant to boost domestic operations.
