USDA’s weekly Crop Progress and Condition report included the agency’s first estimate for condition ratings on corn, soybeans, and spring wheat this season, while also continuing its winter wheat ratings as the harvest gets under way. Ratings of the winter wheat crop will continue until 50% of the crop is harvested. State-level breakdowns of the Pro Farmer Crop Condition Index, and more details around USDA’s ratings are below.
Corn
USDA’s inaugural corn ratings of the season show the crop rated as 5% very poor to poor, 28% fair, and 67% good to excellent. The Crop Condition Index shows that most states remain near year-ago levels to start the season. Iowa saw the highest percent of its crop rated good to excellent at 82%, while Texas saw the highest percent rated very poor to poor at 11%.

Soybeans
USDA’s inaugural soybean ratings of the season show the crop rated as 5% very poor to poor, 29% fair, and 66% good to excellent. The Crop Condition Index showed most states held similar to year-ago levels, echoing what occurred in corn. A majority of states did note marginal declines, though increases in Arkansas, Illinois, and South Dakota from this time last year helped to offset most of the decrease at the national level.

Wheat
Spring wheat received it’s first rating of the season as well, coming in at 6% very poor to poor, 47% fair, and 47% good to excellent. The Crop Condition Index shows a mild increase in conditions from last year’s first rating, as the lack of drought in North Dakota at this time worked to offset declines elsewhere in the country.

Winter wheat was rated at 44% very poor to poor, 30% fair, and 26% good to excellent. The only change to USDA’s national winter wheat rating this week was a 1% shift from ‘good’ to the ‘excellent’ category. The Crop Condition Index showed HRW wheat scoring a very small increase after the Plains finally saw some sparse rain last week, though the crop in that region is largely made at this point.
