Corn futures tumbled, leading grain and soy complex futures toward an ugly end to the week after USDA delivered a bearish round of figures in Friday’s October reports. USDA raised its average corn yield estimate, defying expectations for a cut and lifting new-crop domestic and global carryover. Soybean production was raised slightly. Domestic wheat carryout rose, coming in above estimates partly due to a cut in export estimates, while global ending stocks shrank. The data sent December corn crashing through the $5 level that had been holding psychological support, while soybeans and wheat turned solidly lower. Cattle futures saw gains, with fats supported by tighter supply and packer demand. Lean hogs failed to follow through on short covering, undercut by weak cash fundamentals. We cover all this and more in this week’s newsletter.
