Rains fell across much of the Corn Belt and forecasts remain favorable into July. That weighed heavily on corn and soybeans throughout much of the week, though a bout of late-week strength gave bulls some encouragement, especially after Thursday’s WASDE was an anchor for corn prices. Demand continues to hold up well for both crops, but the anticipation of an expanding world balance sheet into the new marketing year has been enough to persuade funds out of their long positions. El Niño is garnering mainstream media attention. Still, South American producers are facing a margin crunch and do not have as robust of a fertilizer supply chain as their North American counterparts. Cattle futures saw a volatile week of trade amid several cases of New World Screwworm popping up in Texas and New Mexico, prompting USDA to step up its prevention efforts. We cover all this and more in this week’s newsletter.
