Latest Drought Monitor showing drought relief in the plains

Drought relief came to the plains, while dryness expanded in the eastern corn belt again

The September 23rd drought monitor shows 67.8% of the U.S. is experiencing abnormal dryness or drought, up 1.4% from the previous week, with 43.4% in D1 level drought or higher, up 3%.

Notable changes from last week were mainly focused on drought relief across the central and northern plains areas, although some lessening of drought conditions in the Ohio River valley also occurred. These changes were led by a 13% decrease in D0-D4 in Nebraska, a 9% decrease in D0-D4 in South Dakota, and a 5% decrease in D0-D4 in Kansas. Other notable shifts include a 9% increase in D2-D4 in Ohio, and a 10% increase in that same category in Indiana.
