Drought Monitor shows dryness persisting in eastern corn belt

Illinois and Ohio showed the largest gains in abnormally dry conditions

The September 9th drought monitor shows 60% of the U.S. is experiencing abnormal dryness or drought, up 3% from the previous week, with 35.9% in D1 level drought or higher, up 1%. U.S. corn acres in drought conditions D1-D4 are estimated at 13% (up 4%), soybean acres at 22% (up 6%), and spring wheat at 13% (no change). For livestock, 18% of the U.S. cattle inventory is estimated to be in regions experiencing drought, unchanged from last week.

Notable changes in major row crop states from last week include a 20% increase in D1-D4 in Illinois, an 18% increase in D1-D4 in Ohio, a 10% increase in D2-D4 in Tennessee, and an 11% decrease in D1-D4 in Kentucky.
