Cattle on Feed Expected to Contract Vs. Year-ago for First Time Since December 2016

Posted on 09/18/2019 10:11 AM

On average, analysts surveyed by Reuters expect Friday’s Cattle on Feed Report to show there were 11.05 million head of cattle on feed as of Aug. 1, a slight decline from year-ago levels. That would mark the first year-over-year decline in total feedlot inventory since December 2016. Aggressive marketing over the summer and a slowdown in placement rates have helped to draw down the overall number of cattle on feed.

Placements and Marketings are also expected to come in under year-ago levels, with placements expected to drop 6.3%. The range of guesses on that figure is wide and all analysts put placements under year-ago levels.
