Statistics Canada issued their Grain Stocks Report as of Dec. 31, 2015, showing total stocks of wheat, canola and lentils down compared to year-ago. Conversely, total stocks of corn for grain, barley, soybeans and flaxseed came in higher than year-ago, while oat and pea stocks were stable.

The following table is a recap of the report. Figures are in MMT.

stats_canfeb42016"Total stocks of Canadian wheat at Dec 31 decreased 19.3% from the same time last year to 20.7 MMT, as a result of a 6.2% decline in production and lower carry-in stocks (-32.0%) in 2015. That comes in below trade expectations of 21.8 MMT. Hasn't affected the wheat markets generally as broader markets are macro-economic and currency market focused right now...but suggests tighter Canadian wheat carryout prospects this year...though admittedly still amid a sea of surplus global wheat supply.

Barley stocks rose 4.1% above this date a year ago to 5.7 MMT at Dec 31, 2015.

Stocks of oats were virtually unchanged at 2.6 MMT on December 31, 2015.
